What to see in Puno (besides Lake Titicaca)

Most tourists who arrive in Puno do so in order to visit Lake Titicaca. But the southern city of our country has many other attractions to enjoy, so if you have a few days off after visiting the lake, you can not miss these places.

Museum of Coca and Customs

One of the things that most attracts attention to people who visit the Andean highlands is the use of the coca leaf. This product is mainly known for its medicinal use since it is used to prevent altitude sickness in these regions that are located high above sea level.

But the coca leaf has an ancestral history behind it: the ancient inhabitants of the Andes used it, for example, in ceremonies, rituals that some people continue to perform to this day.

Everything related to this sheet is counted in the Museum of Coca and Customs, located just one block from the Plaza de Armas (Calle Llave, 581).

Cathedral

The imposing Cathedral Basilica of Puno, located in the Ayacucho neighborhood, is a great example of the beautiful mixture of Baroque and Andean architecture. One of its main attractions are its two towers, 30 meters high, which are crowned by two bell towers.

The interior of the cathedral, while austere, has some interesting canvases from the Cusco school.

Sillustani

If you have time to leave the city, 34 km north of Puno, you will find the archaeological site of Sillustani. This place was a cemetery built around the twelfth century by the Kolla culture and today you can visit its tombs, called chullpas, which call attention for being a kind of vertical tower.

Deustua Arch

This arch, located in the northern part of the city was built in the 19th century. It is a tribute to the heroes of Junín and Ayacucho, where the battles that led to the Independence of Peru were fought.

Although its architecture is not very complex, it is a place of great tourist attraction because of its historical and patrimonial value.
