Between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, to the northwest of Cusco is "The Sacred Valley of the Incas" by the Vilcanota river that later changes its name to Urubamba.

This river was sacred to the Incas. Its waters are fed by the melting ice from the Verónica or Wacay Wilca mountain, considered the "wife" of the Salcantay. At the side of one of its slopes the Incas built Machu Picchu.

The Sacred Valley has become one of the most important tourist centers in the country. In addition to having a wealth of history, the Urubamba region offers endless possibilities for tourist entertainment: trekking, thermal baths, trips on rafts or kayak on the river, paragliding or hang gliding, horseback riding, climbing, among others.

You cannot miss: the town of Pisac where you can visit the craft market, Ollantaytambo where you will go up the Andean terraces to visit the ruins of the temple of the sun and learn a little more about the types of construction used by the Quechuas, the Salineras of Maras where you will see small salt pools on a mountainside and Chinchero, a place where you can visit the church and admire the paintings and sculptures, among others.

If you want to try some traditional dishes you should try the guinea pig al palo, a food full of vitamins, proteins and different flavors, the aji de tarwi which is a typical dish from the province of Calca that contains tarwi, native potato, cheese, llullucha, oregano, parsley, cilantro, all with a special dressing and you can also try ollucos with chili pepper. This is very popular with the locals, a delicious dish made from ollucos, native potatoes, lamb and many other ingredients.
