Hike the Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu Mountain

Machu Picchu is one of the new 7 wonders of the world. It attracts thousands of tourists every day, who travel from different parts of the world to fulfill their dream of visiting the lost city of the Incas and live a unique experience. Currently, the general admission to the citadel allows you to enter, for 04 hours, between 06:00am to 02:00pm. In this blog, we will tell you all you need to know to have an amazing experience.

Huayna Picchu Mountain

Huayna Picchu means Young Mountain, and it is well-known since it is part of the famous Machu Picchu postcard. Lately this mountain has become famous so we recommended to get your tickets months in advance, especially during the high season and holidays. The entrance to the mountain is in two turns: at 07:00am and at 10:00am, with a capacity of 200 per turn. You will have access to the citadel and then, according to your turn, you will have access to hike the Huayna Picchu Mountain. You will have to sign a guest book to start your journey.

During the hike you have two routes options, a short one that takes approximately 1 hours, and a long one, which can take 3 to 5 hours, depending on your walking pace. During this hike, you will be able to see different Inca ruins and climb through sections such as “The death stairs”, which has more than 183 meters of steps made of stone during the Inca era.

Machu Picchu Mountain

Its meaning in Quechua is Old Mountain and cannot be seen in any Machu Picchu postcard, but it has a wider view of the citadel since it has higher altitude compared to Huayna Picchu mountain. It has a lower difficulty and takes approximately 2 hours to go up and 1 to go down. We recommend you hiking this mountain if you are travelling with children, as it is a much easier route with fewer people.

Similar to Huayna Picchu, this mountain also allows 400 visitors in 2 turns, but tickets are much easier to get and most tourist use it as an option on their second visit to Machu Picchu.

After a wonderful day hiking, any of these two mountains, you can enjoy a fresh shower and well deserved rest at our Tierra Viva Machu Picchu hotel, before returning to the city of Cusco.
