Chullpas of Sillustani Tour

When we talk about Puno, the first thing we think of is Titicaca Lake. However, there are other activities you can do in this wonderful city. One of them is a tour to the Chullpas of Sillustani, which are more than 4,000 meters above sea level. In the following blog we will tell you more about its history and how to get to know this impressive place in the city of Puno.

The tombs, or Chullpas of Sillustani are located 40 minutes from the Main Square, a few blocks from our hotel Tierra Viva Puno Plaza. This place has more than 90 Chullpas, which belong to the Kolla culture, where the principal authorities were buried during the pre-Inca and Inca age. People were buried in fetal position, along with their belongings, gold and silver objects, and even food.

These amazing towers that reach 12 meters high were built in an inverted cone form, so that the deceased would be able to communicate with his Sun God. The most popular tower is the “Chullpa del Lagarto”, the tallest one. The story tells that, unfortunately, it was partially destroyed by huaqueros in search of the gold and silver pieces.

You can visit these famous Chullpas in the morning and in the afternoon. And on the way, make a stop to visit the house of a local family to learn more about their customs and lifestyle. Remember that you can also visit the Chullpas of Sillustani at the time of your arrival or return to the airport of Juliaca, since it is on the way.
