Visit the best museums in Trujillo

Trujillo, also known as the city of the eternal spring, has a cultural reachness as well as being one of the most important cities in the country. Here you can visit many archeological sites such as Chan Chan, Temple of the Sun and Moon, among others. But before you visit these sites, we recomend you to visit the city center and its museums to learn more of the city’s history and culture.

 

Museum of Modern Art Gerardo Chávez

It is the first museo of modern art in Peru, which opened its doors in 2006. It has approximately 80 pieces from national and international artist, including drawings, paintings, and sculptures. If you visit this museum, don’t forget to visit its more iconic piece “The Pope’s Procession”, which has more the 12 meters long in 6 panels. It is located 10 minutes from the city center. You can visit it from Monday to Saturday from 09:00am to 05:00pm and the general admission is 10 soles ($3.50 approximately).

Cathedral Museum

It is located in the Cathedral of the city of Trujillo, in the main square. This museum opened in 1987, and it is divided in 6 sections where you can see recliner used by Pope John Paul II during his visit to the city of Trujillo in 1985. Here you can also see some sculptures, canvases, paintings, and clothes of different cardinals. The general admission is 5 soles ($2.00 approximately).

Toy Museum

Considered the first toy museum in Latin America. This particular museum has a collection of more the 130 toys since the 1950s. Here you can find toys from different parts of the world, being the oldest one a whistle from the Virú culture, with more than 2,300 years old. The museum, created by plastic artist Gerardo Chavez, is definitely a place you can visit with your family. It is located in the city center, a few blocks from Trujillo’s main square. You can visit this museum from Monday to Saturday from 10:00am to 06:00pm and the general admission is 5 soles ($2 approximately).
