Visit Paracas and the Ballestas Islands on your trip to Lima!

Lima is surrounded by many places to make a weekend getaway and enjoy the nature and culture of our country. One of the most emblematic is Paracas, with beaches of red sand, enigmatic messages in dunes and even penguins in the desert!

Can you imagine yourself exploring this fantastic destination? Here we tell you everything you will find here!

What will you see in Paracas and the Ballestas Islands?

The city of Paracas is located four hours south of Lima and it is the perfect place for nature lovers and for those who want to discover more about pre-Hispanic cultures.

One of the main tourist attractions of Paracas are the Ballestas islands, where millions of birds live with sea lions and Humboldt penguins. To visit them, you will have to take a boat from which you can observe a great spectacle of nature: hundreds of birds flying above your head, sea lions resting on the rocks, penguins with their particular way of walking and the sea crashing against the rocks. It sounds good, does not it?

Also, on the way to the Ballestas Islands you can see the Candelabra, a geoglyph drawn on the sand of the dunes. Its impressive size (180 meters long) only looks dull with its age: it is more than 2,500 years old and neither the wind nor the constant earthquakes have managed to blur it. Awesome!

If you want to continue getting into the natural paradises of this region of our country, you can not miss the Paracas National Reserve. This place is impressive from the beginning. The land of this place was at some point the bottom of the ocean and therefore you can find fossil remains and salt on the road and its surroundings.

Once you reach the deepest part of the reserve, you will find beaches that will leave you breathless (with red sands and crystal clear waters!), lakes where beautiful flamingos live, mind-blowing cliffs… and much more!

In addition, the Paracas National Reserve is the perfect destination for adventure sports lovers. Its strong winds are the perfect companion for sports such as paragliding or windsurfing.

How to get to Paracas?

Visiting Paracas from Lima is very simple. Every day, from the center and the south of the capital, numerous buses leave to the south of Peru and pass through this place. Once here, you can move from one place to another by taxi, since the prices are very cheap.
