Its full name is the Monastery of St. Catherine of Siena of Arequipa. It is the only monastery in the whole world within which stands a citadel, whose streets are called by Spanish cities. Founded in the mid-sixteenth century by the Viceroy Francisco Toledo. The first prioress was the rich young Maria de Guzman, who decided to give all his property and seclude themselve at the monastery which, at that time, was still under construction. It is all built in ashlar stone and it´s architectural style is colonial with mestizo influence. Inside it displays a superb collection of colonial paintings , Mannerist and from the Escuela Cusqueña.
