Barranco and Chorrillos are two of the most traditional districts of Lima. Inhabited since pre-hispanic times, these neighborhoods started to gain more notice during the republic, when the wealthiest families of Lima chose the area as their summer destination, settling in their houses or ranches.
In the streets of these two districts it’s possible to find the most bohemian neighborhoods of the city, where you can also visit great museums and galleries with the work of renowned peruvian and foreign artists.
Museums:
- Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC): with a collection of modern and contemporary art dating from 1950, the MAC is the only museum of Lima specialized in the diffusion of art from that period. Its modern facilities have been specially designed and equipped for this purpose. Located on Av. Miguel Grau 1511, Barranco, its opening hours are from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The entrance has a cost of: General S/. 6 (US$ 2.16), Preferred: S/. 4 (US$ 1.44) and on sundays S/. 1 (US$ 0.36)

- MATE (Mario Testino Museum): dedicated to the work of peruvian photographer Mario Testino, globally known for his celebrity portraits, this small but promising museum contains the largest collection of the artist, including many of supermodel Kate Moss, his muse, and the latest photoshoot of Princess Diana of Wales. Its open hours are from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The museum is located in Avenida Pedro de Osma 409, Barranco, and the cost of the entrance is: General S/.15 (US$ 5.40), Students S/.5 (US$ 1.80) and Adults from 65 pay S/.10 (US$ 3.60). Admission is free for children under 12 years old.

- Pedro de Osma Museum: located in Av. Pedro de Osma 423, Barranco, the old residence of the Osma family comprehends two buildings surrounded by gardens with marble sculptures. Both constructions are French styled and eclectic: art nouveau stained glass, metallic ceilings, carved plaster and crystal chandeliers grace more than ten of its halls. The visiting hours are from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and the cost of the entrance is: General S/. 20.00 (US$ 7.20) and Students S/. 10.00 (US$ 3.60). A little bit pricey compared to the others but worthy.

- Lucía de la Puente Gallery: situated on the Paseo Sáenz Peña, in a house declared historical monument, operates this gallery. Since 1995 it has promoted renowned peruvian artists, managing their work and boosting the inclusion of young talents on artistic circuits. Its opening hours are Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 pm and Saturdays from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The entry is free.

- Galería del Barrio: in the most traditional area of Chorrillos you can find the colorful Galería del Barrio. Specializing in peruvian pop art, here you will encounter vintage furniture and ancient cameras, televisions, radios and phones, mixed with the work of national artists, photographers and young peruvian promises. Located in the street Bernardino Cruz (previously Camana) 148, Chorrillos, it is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12: 00 m. to 7:00 p.m. The entry is free.
