On the way to the Colca Valley, next to the Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca and vicuña populations, we find a small town called Patahuasi. It draws our attention to the bizarre rock formations, looking like huge cones hanging to the wall of a hill, which outline the blue sky. These formations created by wind erosion, are in the vast plains of the highlands above four thousand feet. Against them stands a small cafe which offers very good products, a must stop for travelers going to and from the Colca Canyon.

Useful Tips

  • Tea and Coca Tea are offered on the cafe to help cope with the symptoms of altitude sickness. There is also a good selection of breakfasts, sandwiches and some sweets from Arequipa.
  • Craftmen, offer products and textiles to passengers who stop by.
  • From the Cafe, yo can find very good shooting points and panoramic views of the stone forest. Especially early and late in the day.
